lossless wavpack (.wv)

I just downloaded 4 albums of: Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
I found them to be in a .WV format. I don't have anything that opens them.
Do you think that GW will support this format? I hear there's a pluging for winAMP,
but I don't have that installed. The only thing that I have found to do is
use X-Recode and convert it to another format before editing it with GW.
It would be nice to skip that conversion step and open with GW. :ⁿ}~

There's a Winamp plugin, for sure. I've got one album in .wv format that I have to keep it around for that one album...been meaning to convert it to something more standard...like FLAC.

http://www.wavpack.com/downloads.html has a DirectShow filter....if my logic is correct, you should be able to install that filter and Goldwave should be able to open wavepack files.

You could also take something like dbPowerAmp and convert them to a more universal/supported format like FLAC..which Goldwave would open but it'd not be the all in one goldwave opens solution you're looking for...however, it might save you some headaches in the future.

Thanks, something to think about.
I like the idea of the directshow install, but why would I get
dbpoweramp to convert it when I have something to convert it.
I'm try'n to see if I can skip the convert step and open in GW.

I'm not try'n to cut you down, you might know better than I...
You keep mention'n FLAC being some universal/standard format.
I know that mp(x) is lossy and flac is not, but to the average listener,
they don't care, as long as they can hear it when they are 'on the go'.

From what I take, MP4 (MPA) and MP3 seem to be what the stores are selling devices to read.
To me that's more 'standard' if that's what they sell, and need to be converted into to use.
I have now seen some home and car cdplayers start reading WMA's as well as MP3's.
I don't hear of or see anyone carry'n around their necks portable FLAC players with earphones...
When someone sells something that reads FLAC, then 'I' might consider it universal.

That's just my opinion, nothing more, nothing less. (•¿•)

NOTE - I don't know how to open WavPack with GoldWave... I've never seen a WavPack file!

The main advantage of any lossless format is that it can be losslessly converted to any other lossless format. So, it's no big deal if it comes in the "wrong" format... Just convert it to something you like! Or, you can convert to the lossy format of your choice. You can make MP3s today, and and as long as you keep the original (or any lossless copy) you can convert to some other format (lossy or lossless) in the future without cumulative quality loss.

A lot of people rip their CDs to FLAC. They keep the FLAC as a lossless archive on their hard drive, and then they make MP3s or AACs for their portable player.

An advantage of the compressed lossless formats over uncompressed WAV (besides file size) is that they are easier to "tag" with artist/title/album info.

FLAC and ALAC are more universal than WavePack. iPods can play ALAC and there are portable players that can play FLAC.

I'd say there are 3 truly universal formats - Audio CD, WAV (both lossless) and MP3 (lossy). I guess you could say AAC (lossy) is universal too, since it's what iTunes sells.

P.S.
There is a WavPack Forum at HydrogenAudio.org.

Well, the logic is simple if you think about it...

wavepack is NOT a standard format...while it seems to have wide support...in reality, it doesn't. More people know what FLAC is than WavePack...so I mentioned getting dbPowerAmp so you can convert the WV's to FLAC and never have to worry about it again.....plus you don't have to fight with trying to get Goldwave to open it. I don't honestly know if the DirectShow filter will work for you...I haven't really played with that too much in Goldwave. The other problem is when you start adding DirectShow codecs...you sometimes run in to some of the problems other people have of other formats suddenly not working anymore. I don't think too much of transcoding lossless to a more usable format because it saves headaches in the future.
iPods can play ALAC and there are portable players that can play FLAC.
I know Rockbox supports FLAC, along with ALAC...wavepack...monkeys...wav....I believe the only lossless formats it's missing is TTA (True Audio) and MPEG-4 Lossless...mostly because of license/code incompatibilities.

Goldwave supports WAV, OGG, VOC, IFF, AIF, AFC, AU, SND, MP3, MAT.

In order play wv on GW, you have to convert it to GW compatible format. I recommend you [deleted] which convert WV to MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A, WMA, OGG, AC3, AIFF and so on.

Hope it can help you!!

A typical spammer trying to sell their stuff. Too bad they wasted their time (and mine).
