Play Selection Does Not Always Go Back to Beginning

I'm currently running the Goldwave 5.63 Beta version under Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit version). I've noticed that when I hit the playback arrow that is set for "Play Selection" the playback frequently does not start from the beginning of the selection. This makes it tricky to find the end of a recorded piece and either mute or delete the remainder of the selection.

I just tried a quick test and I did notice that if you Pause playback [F7] and then hit the "Play Selection" button it will simply "un-pause" playback and continue at the current cursor position. However, if you Stop playback [F8] then "Play Selection" will start at the beginning of the selection. Would this help explain the behaviour you describe?

Gord,

Except when I'm in Cue mode I don't use F7 or F8 to pause or stop playback. I guess I never realized they would do that outside of Cue mode. I just tried it and it doesn't solve the problem. When this problem occurs I'm usually working with a short passage in one second view in a highlighted area that's frequently only a half second or so in length. Consequently, I don't have a lot of time to press extra keys. I use the little control panel and press the center play button, which is linked to "Play Selection", and then I let it stop automatically at the end of the selection. Sometimes I want to listen more than once before I'm sure I'm hearing what I want, but I don't want to turn on autorepeat, which would probably drive me crazy. Often, after playback stops at the end of the selection and I press the play button again, it starts playing at some random point in the selection instead of going back to the beginning. This didn't seem to happen in Version 5.58, so I'm assuming it's something new in the beta version. Other than that the beta version seems to be working okay for me.

I'm not sure what you mean by "cue mode". Is there a sequence of steps that consistently causes playback not to start at the beginning of the selection when playback is stopped and you press a Play Selection button?

The region assigned to the third play button is used for a number of things in GoldWave (rewind, fast forward, etc.). Press F11, choose the Play tab and set Play 3 to "Selection".

Also see the help for other keys you can use, such as Ctrl+[.

Chris,

My reference to "Cue mode" is when I've pressed the Cues button and have the Cue Points message box on the screen. My playback button 2 is already set to "Selection", the default I believe. I tried your suggestion of setting button 3 to "Selection", but it works the same way. Playback tends to start about a half-second into the highlighted area regardless of the view time (e.g., 1 second, 10 seconds, 1 minute). I'm still running version 5.63 that I downloaded on 24 June. At the moment your website doesn't list a newer version.

Chris,

Additional info: CTRL-[ does exactly the same thing. The playback restart point for all options varies a bit for each time I press the play button, and occasionally it does go back to the beginning of the selection, but not usually. This doesn't seem to be related to any particular sequence of events. For example, for the tests I just ran I merely loaded an MP3 file into Goldwave, highlighted a short section not at the beginning, and tried the various playback options. Even after I press CTRL-A to highlight the entire song, the same thing happens. Sometimes it starts playing at the beginning, sometimes a short interval from the beginning. Even playback button 1, which is set to play "All" is erratic. It's almost as if the software is sometimes injecting a slight delay before it begins actually displaying the cursor and sending out audio. I'm running an AMD Quad processor, very fast, with only the usual Windows 7 junk running in the background, so I'm not running any sort of CPU hog. I've also got 8GB of real memory. I just went into BitDefender's Performance Monitor and set it to monitor all processes. Goldwave is up but idle. Nothing is using more than 4% of the CPU, and that's BitDefender itself. Also, total storage usage is 25% or less. As I said, this doesn't happen with version 5.58, but this is the first beta version I've tried.

Interesting clue. I just switched to DirectSound API and all playbacks start at the beginning of the selection, just as they do in version 5.58, so it appears to be something to do with the Core Audio/WASABI setting.

Hmmm, maybe it's making your computer run too hot. :)

(Sorry, bad joke: "WASABI" vs "WASAPI")

Interesting. Might be a driver glitch, since no similar reports are coming in (but it could still be a problem in the beta). What information do you get when you press F11, choose the System tab, then choose the Information button?

Also if you adjust the latency setting on the Device tab, does help at all?

Hi Chris.

Sorry for the delay. I've been busy starting to publish my novels as eBooks (plus hosting the grandson for a week) so I got a bit backlogged on my other stuff. I switched back to WASAPI (or is that WASABI :) ) mode and it's still doing it. Here's the info:

The latency setting seems to have little effect in WASAPI mode although it's possible there were slightly longer delays at 1.0 rather than at 0.1. However, at any setting the start point for playback is erratic. In DirectSound mode the latency setting had no effect and playback always started at the beginning of the selection. I don't have a problem using the DirectSound mode, but if you plan to make that option go away in the future it could cause problems then.

What happens if you select the Realtek audio device for playback (connect the speakers/headphones to it, if necessary). Does playback start correctly for that device?

Hi Chris.

I just ran a test. In WASAPI mode with output set to Realtek speakers it seems to work pretty much correctly, the same as it does in DirectSound mode. With a 1 second display it always starts playback at the beginning of the selection unless I keep hitting the playback button fast before the selection runs out. Then sometimes the vertical line (cursor) on the display will not pop up until up to .05 sec (one grid line) late, but that may be some sort of screen refresh time because the audio is always complete. I even tested with a sound clip that has a .05 second burst followed by about .2 sec or so silence and then another burst, and beat on the playback arrow.

So here's a summary with the display set to one second. In WASAPI mode with output set to the HDMI channel the playback audio and cursor can start late, up to a half second or more. With output set to the Realtek speakers the audio always starts at the beginning although the cursor may not appear for up to .05 seconds (one gridline). In DirectSound mode the audio always starts at the beginning of the selection for both output devices (and the default output device option, too) although again the cursor may not appear for up to .05 seconds.

I also tried changing the default output device in Windows rather than in Goldwave. Same results.

The latency setting didn't seem to have any effect in any mode.

I suppose there could be some delay in getting the signal to the HDMI card, but why would it work okay in DirectSound mode and not in WASAPI mode. You know a lot more about the Windows internals than I do, so maybe there's some sort of clue there.

HP set up a rather weird configuration on this computer to get HDMI output. Both the HDMI video and audio are excellent except for this strange glitch. I do have the HDMI audio set to 5.1 and the Realtek to regular stereo, but that shouldn't make a difference (and it's a pain to change the setup). The little Sony receiver I'm using is 5.1 (speakers on the library shelves between books).

It's not unusual for the playback cursor to appear that way due to latency, refresh rates, and similar delays. However the AMD/HDMI glitch seems more and more like a driver issue. Do you have the latest AMD driver? Looks like a new one was released recently.

Hi Chris.

Okay. I installed the driver for the AMD HD Audio Device, the one you recommended, and it went on fine. Then I tested it. No change. I went into Windows Control Panel Devices, selected that device, and ran a Windows check for driver updates. It said I had the latest version. Then I selected the Realtek HD Audio device and ran the same Windows check for driver updates. It found an update and installed it. Now when I run Goldwave In Direct mode it works fine. However, in WASAPI mode the HDMI output still has the variable delay, but the Realtek speaker output puts out loud noise unless I set the Goldwave playback volume to zero. I tried Windows Media Player (on this system it's version 12) and it plays okay to both the HDMI output and the speaker output (to my headphones). I think I'll just have to give up on the WASAPI output for this computer.
Oh yes, in case you're wondering, I did reboot the system after I installed each driver.

Realtek drivers are a mess. You'll probably have to uninstall and re-install to get it to work properly. Or you can use System Restore to go back to the old drivers that were working.

As for the AMD HD audio device, there doesn't seem to be solution to that problem. GoldWave seems to be working correctly otherwise. Do you always get a delay using the Test button on the Device tab too?
