Re: Effects - Current Playback Position
The elapsed time is realtime. For some temporal effects, like Doppler, the elapsed time does not match the actual location in the file, so if the the current playback position line was shown for effect previewing, it wouldn't be in the right place.
I'll look into making the CD Reader window resizable.

The Compression/Expander effect in GoldWave already supports downward expansion. The "Reduce quiet parts" and "Noise gate" presets are examples.
GoldWave does not support musical notation or sequencer file formats like MIDI, MOD, S3M, XM, etc. Those are not digital audio files (though some of them contain instrument samples).

Thanks Chris - I use the compressor and the noise gate quite a bit (I have found some noise gate settings that actually work quite well). I have seen the "reduce quiet parts" setting, but since the more familiar term "downward expander" was not used, I did not realize that is what it is.The Compression/Expander effect in GoldWave already supports downward expansion. I have had the opportunity to play with some of your competitors and can testify that while they all seem to be functional, Goldwave is still easier to learn, easier to use and is superior to anything at or near the price.
I am curious about why some terminology seems a bit different than what I would be accustomed to - such as with the compressor, for instance (I am accustomed to "threshold - ratio - gain - attack - release - knee") and also as we just discussed, downward expansion. Not a complaint at all, just curious.
Merry Christmas, and thanks for a wonderful product which I greatly enjoy using!
Cue Point "Wizard"
I imagine we are all attracted to GoldWave because of its combination of POWER, with ECONOMY OF FEATURES, so laugh at me if you like, for suggesting another "wizard".
I would really like the inverse (converse?) of:
Edit --> Cue Point --> Split File
I would envisage it would be like an Open Menu where you select files, and GoldWave then lays them, end to end, in the time line, inserting Cue Points which are labelled with the File Names of the input files!!!!
OK, I can hear the laughter from here!
DDA
P.S. I assumed this would be simple, requiring ALL files to have the same format. (Like the files you would get from an Edit --> Cue Point --> Split File).

GoldWave uses "standard" terminology in most cases, but sometimes the functionality is slightly different. In a standard Compressor/Expander effect, the Ratio setting always boosts the volume for the expander and reduces it for the compressor. In GoldWave, the Multiplier setting allows boosting or reducing in both the expander and compressor modes.
The Tool | File Merger command added in v5.10 would be the opposite of the Split File feature.

Tools | File Merger
Any possibility of having a check-box on Tools | File Merger which says "insert cue points at file boundaries"???
Even un-labelled cue points???

Re: Tools | File Merger
That should be possible to add in a future update. The name of each file could be used for each cue point's name. It would work only if the output file type supports cue points.

Bypass effect
Greetings!
Just purchased Goldwave and joined the forums. I have been using it as shareware for a little while and am very impressed with what it has to offer.
There were a couple of features that I would like to see added if possible (at least they don't appear to exist, please correct me if I am missing them). The first is an effect bypass so one can compare what the current effect settings will sound like in comparison to the original. The other is a loop option when listening to a preview of any given effect.
Keep up the good work! I've been comparing wave editors over the past few months looking for one that had the features but also wouldn't break the bank and Goldwave to me has proven to be hands down superior to any other in its class.
Cheers!

You can do this already, sort of... the regular playback buttons will bypass the effect, so they can be used to listen to the original, while the buttons in the preview dialog let you sample the effect. The first is an effect bypass so one can compare what the current effect settings will sound like in comparison to the original.

Just to elaborate on what JackH said, you can use the playback buttons on the Control window to hear the unmodified audio even when an effect window is shown. The playback buttons don't work if the Control window is closed (docked in the tool bar).
Effect bypass and loop options are on the list of things to do.

Re: feature requests
Can you make it multi-processor useable?
I'm tired of my 4-core only using 26% or so (one processor avarage)
Can you make it use all 4 processors, like AVS video does?
This will cut down on processing/saving/loading time, NO?
